Van Sant's Elephant
After having somehow managed to sit through the interminable Gerry, I had feared than Gus Van Sant had completely lost his touch. Not so. I watched Elephant over the weekend, and I can’t recommend it highly enough. It is beautifully constructed -- truly one of the best movies of the last few years. Yes, is unnerving. The high school takes on the feel of the hotel in The Shining – a claustrophobic, high-walled maze with long, menacing corridors that defy escape. It is populated by a number of cruel spirits. When my favorite character walked into a large room with the work ‘Library’ over the door I couldn’t help but cringe. But it is a very intriguing piece of film making that’s worth checking out.
