Sex Crimes in Prison

Now I know I'm probably being far too hopeful here, but is it really too much to hope that this new concern with the dark and cruel things that have been allowed to go on in prisons in Iraq might lead some people to be more concerned about stopping rape in prisons in the United States? I am continually mystified by the fact that millions of Americans think it's perfectly ok that this goes on, and that they even think it's a laughing matter. I know that my dream of the government doing more to combat this is probably going to go unfulfilled. I mean even with all the evidence in this case the media seems to prefer the less jarring term "sexual abuse" to the R word. But it would be nice if some good was able to come out of these scandals. But since in this country it's common practice for even the guards to beat prisoners or make male prisoners wear women's underwear I'm not going to get my hopes up.
