The 77th Annual Academy Award Nominations

The nominations were announced this morning. Do any of you have anything you want to say about them?

My thoughts? Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and its director should have been nominated, as should have the director of Finding Neverland (if you're going to nominate it for Best Picture ...). Julie Delpy should have been nominated for Best Actress (though not at the expense of Kate Winslet's nomination) for her performance in Before Sunset, Rodrigo de la Serna should have been nominated as Best Supporting Actor for The Motorcycle Diaries. That said, the Academy got several things right, and I'm pleased to see that Lemony Snicket was nominated for some of its considerable technical strengths.

I didn't even see it (yet), but Door in the Floor got such raves it seems like it should have showed up. Also, I'm inclined to think Jim Carrey also should have been nominated for Eternal Sunshine.

And where is Tom Hanks!? Did he miss a deadline or something?

I quite liked The Door in the Floor, but I think it was too small a picture to get noticed by most Academy voters.

Much smaller than Sideways. Door in the Floor made less than 5 million dollars in terms of its US box office. And, in addition, it was released months earlier (in case you subscribe to the theory that Academy voters have poor memories re: things released before the fall).

I don't know a soul who's seen Being Julia. If she wins for that it'll be akin to Jessica Lange's win for Blue Sky.
