OK, I should probably leave this post to Binky since she knows his work better than I do (so Binky, you know, feel free to write a new post on this, alter this one to add your thoughts, or just express your thoughts in the comments if you want), but I continue to apparently miss the point relating to what makes Will Oldham so great. And after seeing him live ... I still don't get it. Whereas last Monday night's Clem Snide show (scroll down a couple of posts to read about it) and great energy and showed off some of their skills and music in a whole new light, and I can't say seeing Will Oldham live gave me any insights into his music that I don't get from his recordings. I'm not arguing that it's not still fitting music to be depressed to. But I didn't find him to be especially impressive on stage.

However I have to agree with you that live he was less impressive than I had hoped. However, what we saw was actually Oldham partnered with Matt Sweeney (a new album called SuperWolf). I confess I have not yet listened to it. Some of the reviews I have read have noted Sweeney's influence. *shrugs* I listen to www.radioindierock.com, and when it was still www.invisibleradio.com (oh, say about the time Yoshimi came out), my favorite DJ Schroeder used to play Bonnie Prince Billie all the time. It was one of the acts I was introduced to thanks to Schroeder (thank you thank you thank you) and I liked listening a lot. That being said, I listened on the computer while thinking deep thoughts. Which is quite a departure from standing in a club for a couple of hours. In fact, I started enjoying the show a lot more when we moved to a booth. The music seemed more suited to cry-in-your-beer bar than to lively-standing-up college-town bar.
Bah. Sorry. I am still not back up to speed. But maybe that adds a bit to Armand's view.
