The FDA to Ban Gay Sperm Donors?

What the hell is this about? Quite apart from it being blatantly offenisve and bigoted, I really fail to see what good this does. If you don't want people who who've engaged in risky sex to donate sperm ... well, you'd get at that with a whole different set of questions.

this is no different than the exact same practice blood banks have been employing for years. i make a point of mocking the questions and presenting hypotheticals by which i, as a straight man, could answer their questions honestly and be about ten times as dangerous as the average gay man. they laugh, acknowledge my protest, more often than not profess a certain degree of agreement with me regarding the adequacy of the questions . . . but they continue to go through the questionnaire.

of course, these policies in both regards make perfect sense to the GOP -- after all, Gay is catching.

True enough Joshua - but this proposal seems much more an attempt to get gays out of the gene pool ... and honestly to me that goes past Orwell-creepy.

of course, that is an available reading, and hardly one beyond the pale, although of course to the extent that's true the GOP mocks itself. you can't simultaneously treat homosexuality as a choice and as a heritable trait. the typical, choice / sin account hardly permits the view that gay will be passed through anonymous sperm donations, now does it.

"get gays out of the gene pool"

This occurred to me immediately, and the echo of gross hypocrisy was nearly deafening, because of course, caring about "gayness" in the gene pool suggests a belief that being gay is something besides a "lifestyle choice."

The GOP mocks itself!?! Surely you jest.

I'd put it under playing it safe - even if they don't really think it's genetic ... maybe they don't want to take the risk.

Too bad we don't have cable or I could have seen the Jon Stewart mocking of this. (via Feministing).
