Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

It was good. Rowling certainly has a way with building a story and ingeniously inserting all kinds of details in creating her own (or Harry's own) universe. I didn't like it as much as Order of the Phoenix, a few bits were painfully predictably, and her endings her becoming too similar. But nonetheless, it's a diverting read. And I like where this is taking us for the last book.

I agree with you about this not being as good as Order of the Phoenix. It just seemed to change tempo irregulary, and the ending just went on and on (though in her defense maybe she was inspired by the last Star Wars and LOTR movies that did the same thing--or maybe she realizes she can't put too much action in her book that will be cut out by the movie version). I did enjoy the bits with the fighting house elves as well as the development of Snape's character, but the focus on the Ministry of Magic, the politics of being a team captain, and Slughorn's character just seemed to drag down the pace. And I get using the pensieve as a literary device, but it's so like a booth review in football that just delays the advancing action.
