Iraq Roundup

In case you weren't already depressed about the end of summer, here's some more good news from Iraq.

First, the mayor of Baghdad has been ousted in a "municipal coup d'etat" and replaced by a member of a Shiite militia.

With four days to go on the constitution a powerful group of Shiites is making a bid for an autonomous region in the "oil rich South."

There are continued fears that women's rights are going to be restricted by the new constitution.

Ah yes, pluralism on the march.

I continue to be perplexed at the shoddy or at least incomplete reporting that's been done on the mayo of Baghdad being removed. Not a single major press report I've seen has included a single word on how the deposed mayor became mayor, or analysis of how this relates (if at all) to the January elections. We could use a bit of context here.

Indeed. And there has been no follow-up anywhere. I've been looking around. Nothing besides the NYT and BBC.

I lied to you. Crooked Timber has an update with additional information.
