Scott Crapp, er, Stapp

Scott Stapp:

"I just felt hated so I wanted to go away," he says.

Dude, you didn't just feel hated. You were hated, and are hated for the crap you put out and called music. And this statement isn't helping:

"Creed's sound is my sound," Stapp says, lounging on a sofa backstage before an appearance on "The Tonight Show." "I think my record is going to speak for itself to the Creed fans. I think it's going to be like when Sting left The Police."

Oh, I see. When a decent pop band disintegrated and the self-centered lead singer went out to create a decade of worthless pap. The worthless pap part I get, but the decent pop band, no effing way dude.

Oh, and by the way, enjoy him while he's 7, because in a couple of years, he's going to hate your ass for giving him a really stupid, pretentious name that says more about your ego than anything else.

Stapp's first priority was rededicating himself to his son, Jagger, now 7. His second was getting back to making music.

What would I do without CNN?

Aw come on, no fair beating up on Sting. Through Ten Summoner's Tales he was a pretty nifty solo act, with far more musicianship and musical curiosity than, say, Phil Collins who screwed the pooch as a solo act from minute one. I'm not denying that they're both in the same place now, but Sting put out several excellent albums on his own.

I love you Moon, and therefore choose not to respond to that assertion about "several."

Isn't invoking the name of Phil Collins in a debate over the quality of music, something akin to using Stalin as a bar for comparison when discussing human rights? I'm with you Moon - Sting is better than Phil Collins. But you might have found a way to extend rather stronger praise if you really like Sting.

Nothing Like the Sun

The Soul Cages

Ten Summoner's Tales

So yes, several.

As for Phil Collins, the rhetorical point is taken (although Genesis for an album or three before PC was designated lead singer, and for one album with him at the helm (Snowman), was a rather seriously underrated band, so PC to me is a similar example of something interesting dissolving into pablum).

I also should add that I think Sting's a pretty talented lyricist, but more in a Romantic poet I-know-English-excruciatingly-well vein than in the all-too-familiar I'm-so-cool-I'll-only-use-romantic-tropes-at-three-levels-of-ironic-remove fashion today's most clever lyricists tend to do.

Anyway, there's no accounting for taste.
