The March '06 Kos Poll for the '08 Nomination

Wow, that censure resolution sure seems to have helped Russ Feingold's standing with the engaged, liberal and blogging base of the Democratic party. And Wes Clark's numbers are (predictably) sliding.

No Dean or Dole? Do we have it on good authority that neither is running? And if not, why list others as to whom we have no good authority that they are?

I like Feingold, but truly I wish that Clark could figure out how to sell himself, because he's got amazing potential given his credibility on military matters.

I still want to draft the Al Gore that's been whistle-stop stemwinding for the past couple of years, but even if that's whom we drafted, I imagine he'd turn back into the robot by the time he secured the nomination. Such is the inevitable result of running our political process like a stock market -- all the focus on short-term gain, appearances, the quick score, rather than looking long term and trying to plumb beneath the surface to distinguish a star from a dog. I don't suppose it matters that Buffett has gotten richer than god investing in the latter fashion, while a million day traders are back at their day jobs now, but it should.

Yup great. Feingold in '08. Applaud the censure resolution. "Nice cojones there Russ, glad you're up in the polls." Now can we focus on what matters? The midterms!

Dean is NOT running. Gore is probably not running. Clark - I was so ready to pull for him in '08. I really like the guy. But he's not much of a politician, and honestly he's no better than #3 on my personal list of '08 favorites at the moment. It's a shame that Sen. Lincoln's not running for governor though - I'd love to see Clark in the Senate right now.

What about the performance ratings stuff? I haven't had time to read any of it.

I don't find any of that too surprising, given the kinds of plugged-in, activist types that I presume dominate the Kos poll takers.

Dean has pissed off a lot of the DC Democrats with his 50 state approach to rebuilding the party. A lot of the usual powers that be think he's wasting money. BUT, among a lot of the activists, this is all great stuff b/c 1) they like the idea of fighting EVERYWHERE, building farm teams, etc. and 2) they tend not to like the DC Dem establishment which they see as self-involved, ineffectual, and too-quick to abandon the base.

Pelosi's unpopularity isn't too shocking given that it's hard to point to anything she's successfully done - but of course part of that isn't so much her fault as it is the problems with the job. Being Minority Leader in the US House doesn't give you much power. And of course she's often not at the forefront of the members of the House who are seen as sticking-it to Bush and fighting extremely hard on the NSA stuff (that's more John Conyers terroritory, or maybe Charlie Rangel).

Reid has a bit more influence over policy matters, he's made a handful of really adept moves, and he's not seen as being as closely associated with the powers-that-be who shape Dem election strategizing in DC, so I'm not surprised he's more popular with the base than Pelosi, even if he his considerably more conservative.
