Dating the Characters of Sex and the City

I've been watching Sex and the City for the last couple of months. I didn't watch it when it was on - but I've become hooked. It's fun, pretty, witty, and best of all gets a lot better as the series progresses. Some of the more tiresome traits of some of the characters fade, and the writing gets ever sharper. I'm now in season 5 which is, I think, better than any of the seasons that precede it.

And much like the "Who's Your Favorite Beatle?" question can tell you a fair bit about a person, I think which character on this show you'd want to date tells you a lot about what someone is looking for in a relationship. So I'll throw that question out there. Given their personalities, looks and behaviors, if you could date one character on this series (male or female) - who would it be?

I have dated the Kim Cattrall. Carrie and the dark haired one: never. My ideal match would most likely be the redhead (Miranda?).

You want someone that bossy, argumentative, self-involved and neurotic (and I say that as someone who likes her best out of the four main characters)? That's interesting. Well, she does have a laidback fat cat and an appreciation of the joys of chocolate.

How did dating Kim Cattrall work out for you? If I was to date any of the 4 women, that's probably the one I'd choose.

Oh, though for the record, my top choice out of the whole show for would-be partners would probably be Steve (who dated Miranda, the red-head). Samantha (Cattrall) would be my pick out of the ladies.

Well, obviously, it didn't work out. In many ways it was fun while it lasted, but god what a hella lotta trouble. And as for Miranda, it's not the neurotic part, but I'm thinking of later in the series where she had the baby, moves in with her partner etc. THe argumentative (I was thinking more like "strongly opinionated") and intelligent are highly favorable qualities for me.

Definitely Mr. Big because he's so big and *such* a competent police detective.

I literally ran into Chris Noth in Macy's during a Christmas stint at the MLA in NYC. We were both on our cell phones near the cashmere sweater sale. I was talking to my mother, he to his travel agent, and we walked around the table right into one another. We dropped our phones, and I said something wonderfully clever like "Oh my God, Mr. Big I love Law and Order" and he smiled, said thanks, picked his phone up and continued to book his tickets to the Bahamas. I picked up my phone and said something clever like "Oh my God, mom, I just ran into Mr. Big who I love on Law and Order."

I think I owe Bloodless Coup a dollar for making you all read that story...

Well, it's good to know she continues to mellow. Still, that's an interesting progression you're showing - from being with the most sexual of all the characters to moving on to the one who's probably explicitly ruled out engaging in more sex acts than any other.

I'm not saying your choice is at all based on that - but maybe it says something that over time you've come to be more interested in the intelligence aspect as opposed to the carnal aspect.

But maybe that's a general thing that happens to lots of people as they get older.

Actually, no. The carnal thing was as much about intelligence or more... that was actually part of what drove the carnal (in additional to hotness, of course). It was just that all that self-absorption and shallowness got so tiresome. Then again, in SatC, she also becomes much deeper when she goes through the breast cancer thing, so I guess I am judging early her against later Miranda.

George or John. Not Paul. Certainly not Ringo.

Marge Simpson is the only Ringo in the known universe - and of course she's a fictional character.

I'm a George myself - albeit one who surrounds himself with far too many tortured, supposedly-deep Johns. Gues that's what I get for having befriended so many young artists.

You know, before you put that, I almost wrote that I could be a Ringo. I bet he's an interesting character.

OK, I stand corrected and you stand with Marge Simpson - there's worse company to keep.

Crystal that you love Big is no surprise at all - and hey, fun to have that personal experience.

Well, you know how sexy I find a quick mind and cleverness, so I'm with you there. And my reasons for picking Samantha are partially tied to that - she's witty and bright, if not Harvard Law. But more than that she's explicit, direct, tells you want she thinks, has little patience for tiresome games - but at the same time she's not mean to people, impolite or inconsiderate unless they really deserve it. She's also probably the quickest to defend her friends - and knows the best and most direct ways to do it. And she's just fun - and while stuff might get her down, it doesn't keep her down. Her jealousy is probably my #1 problem with her - but then that's been heavily highlighted where I am in the series (she's just dropped Richard).

SITC- Miranda, no question.

Beatle- Paul.

I think that may be the weirdest combo you'll get.
