He'll be 80 this year, won't he? That's a fair bit past the average third-world revolutionary's sell-by date.
He may be even older. I think, if he gets re-elected (probable), and if he makes it all the way through the next six-year term (unlikely), he would be the oldest person to be Senator (beating Strom Thurmond). This is a dubious honor.
Actually, I was talking about Fidel. I don't usually file Byrd under "third-world revolutionary", though I'm willing to be persuaded to reconsider. :-)
I'm not sure Byrd has ever had a revolutionary thought in his life. Yes, I think Fidel is past 80, but you'd have to check. Binky?
His 80th birthday is coming up this summer.
Byrd - who indeed has almost certainly never had a revolutionary thought in his life - is 88.
