The Frivolous Post

I like to think that I am immune to advertising. Mostly, I think it’s because I can resist the lure of TV ads. Of course, normally, I don’t watch television. I have a television, but use it only for things like Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando or watching Ronin one more time.

Being on vacation, I have access to things that I normally don’t. Like sun and surf, of course, but also, television. I’ve been seeing horrible commercials, and there are plenty of them, including the meat lovers (what is it? Chilis? Shenanigans? where the dudes all growl their entrees until the “unmanly” one says vegetable medley?) one that Twisty wrote about last week.

Thus, it is with a heavy heart, that I admit my weakness and lay down my will to resist the almighty KFC commercial.

I want that fucking bowl.

Oh yeah, that bowl. The one in the commercial where the list of ingredients reads like a heart attack casserole. I want it.

Mashed potatoes. Corn. Deep fried chicken bits. Gravy. Topped with cheese.

And the kicker? Now that I am ready to admit my powerlessness over the KFC? The local franchise in the town where I am enjoying the above sand and surf?

Closed for renovations.

It’s a cruel, cruel summer.

Damn it, now I'm craving KFC and the nearest one is half an hour away. I'll get you for this.

So looking at the KFC website - I see there's one in Sabraton. Did ya'll know this? And to think, those bowls have been that close all along.

and why were you looking at the KFC website?

B/c (as occasionally happens - though I don't think I've eaten it in years) I felt an urge for crispy fried chicken ... and hey, if I want that, why not fried chicken covered in cheese and served over a pile of mash potatoes?

And sadly it appears that the nearest Popeye's is all the way up in Latrobe.

Mmmmm - fried chicken and buttery biscuits.

have i commented, in any of these fast food threads, about the lack of filling fast food of any arguable nutritional utility (vs. value, about which the less said the better) available to an ovo-pesco-lacto-whatever-it-is-i-am? if any of the mainstream places put half the effort into their fish sandwich that they do into their other offerings, they'd sooner or later happen across something i found appetizing, but the normal standard unchanged-in-decades processed fish sandwich offered by McD's/BK/Wendy's is so disgusting as to be out of the question, and though LJS might have something, there just aren't very many around, especially near interstates where fast food would tend to come in handy for me. over the years, as a frequent long-distance driver, i've settled on a most unsatisfying "meal" when something meal-sized is indicated: big-ass (whatever name) fries + apple (or whatever) pie + vanilla shake. i'm not saying burgers, chicken, or whatever, are especially good for you, but they are considerably more meal-like than anything i can grab at a drive-thru. and while the burger joints have belatedly gotten around to offering veggie burgers, that doesn't seem to have made it into Pennsylvania's T and other outlying areas. it's probably the single biggest inconvenience about being a vegetarian, at least in this country, where pretty much any slow-food restaurant has something i'm happy to eat within my dietary guidelines.

Huh - I hadn't thought of that - but it's an excellent point. Why doesn't BK have a grilled fish thing? Or MickeyD's have tasty fish nuggets with accompanying tasty sauces? That's really weird. Especially since most of those places now have at least a half dozen variations on a burger.

So Binky ... I think you and I should make a pilgrimage out to KFC soon. We can be disgusted with ourselves together.

actually, sheetz has made my life better with a pretty broad menu of tolerable food, and decent egg sandwiches. unfortunately, those aren't drive-thrus, which is really the singular convenience on the road.
