Sullivan and Wright in Madison

This morning Ann Althouse posted a few pictures of some of the architectural gems of Madison, Wisconsin - including a couple of shots of Wright's "Airplane House", and (are you sitting down?) a picture of a frat house designed by Louis Sullivan. I'm not often surprised, but I never expected to type that last phrase.

I've been trying to post a link to a pic of my old fraternity house at Cornell, which was designed by John Russell Pope, but you guys have got the antispam thing screwed down so tight that apparently commenters can't post links of any kind any more. Baltar can probably google you up a pic if you're interested.

Email it to me and I will post it. We are drastically in need of an upgrade of our software, and the old spam filter is getting wonky. By the way, it grabbed this comment too.

There is a frat house here that looks almost exactly like that. From my experience, I would say that many look like these on the outside but very few look like the Sullivan house on the inside.

And I'm surprised no one bit on how I got to sleep in the Sullivan house.

Well I hadn't been on-line for 90 minutes, but now that I'm checking in again - ok, just what exactly were you doing in that frat house (and yes, the interiors are remarkable)? ;)

My sister's husband is a graduate of the U of Wisconsin, and was a brother there back in the late 60s/early 70s. They have a policy of allowing alumni and their families to stay at the house when in town. We spent a night there back in the 80s when I traveled with my sister and bro-in-law to check out the U. So I slept in one of the rooms that Ann Althouse talks about being normally cluttered. It really wasn't bad at all. And having been a little sister at a frat at UF, I've seen the insides of some totally wrecked frat houses.
