Are there any holidays that are celebrated on the actual holiday anymore?

Just now, at 10:39 pm, July 2, 2006, the fireworks started.

There's got to be small-minded bureaucratic thinking behind that decision.

And of course, silly me, sitting at home, thinking that the Fourth of July fireworks might actually get set off on the fourth of July.

I am truly stumped by what kind of thinking led to fireworks on the night of Sunday the 2nd instead of on the national holiday that is also a work night. Does anyone know why this happened? Or where we can sign a petition to ensure it doesn't happen again?
