Rummy on the Outs? If so, Why?

OK, sure there are dozens, scores, hundreds or reasons why he should be unpopular in the White House - but those have been true for some time. If Laura's reading the president's words (and lack thereof) correctly, it would appear his stock has fallen with the president. If so, why now? Could it have to do with what's in some of Seymour Hersh's recent reporting (in the August 21st issue of The New Yorker), that Secretary Rumsfeld was rather less enthusaistic than others in the administration about Israel's war in Lebanon?

She's been beating that drum for several days now; I suspect she has a source who works for someone who might have been offered the job.

Why now? Some possibilities: Joe Citizen pays less attention to the news during the second half of August than he does during most of the rest of the year; wanting to get someone in place well before the midterms; because Rumsfeld said or did or didn't say or do something that was the last straw; because W finally woke up to the fact that Rumsfeld had screwed everything up (admittedly unlikely); something else?

Well I guess it's just the possible "something elses" that have me intrigued. It's easy to see reasons for both dumping and keeping him prior to November 7. But if his tenure isn't dependent on the elections, and if he's really in trouble now, well, I'm just curious as to what sort of policy clash would make the president finally willing to cut him loose. Israel's war seems a real possibility. But I guess I was also just curious if someone could think of another specific policy debate that could have made the president unhappy with him.
