Schumacher to Retire

Baltar will have more to say about this as our resident F1 guy. Plus, Schumacher is not the one I think of when I hear the words "greatest driver of all time."

I often wonder what Schumacher's record would be -- and what the assessment of him would have been -- had Senna been around to kick his ass for a few more years.

I also wonder what unfair advantages he's had along the way. I'm 99.8% sure that Benetton -- the team with whom Schu built his reputation -- was cheating on an epic scale, but of course we'll probably never know. Not that Scuderia Ferrari would ever cheat, of course. (And not that the F1 hierarchy would do anything about it if they did; Ferrari being the cavallino that pulls the golden cart, as it were...)

Oh, and there are quite a few candidates for the title of "greatest racing driver of
all time".

I'd probably vote for Fangio or Nuvolari, but it's an extremely debateable question. (Incidentally, the observant will note that Mansell did not make my list. I don't think THAT is debateable.)

Niki Lauda I might give you but Alain Prost? Prost?!

Blasphemy!

I can't stand Prost, but he does kinda have to be in the conversation. And hey, at least I didn't list Piquet.
