South Dakota, Blood Red, but How "Conservative"?

Or what sort of conservative? The high-profile abortion ban on the state ballot has been defeated! Two other referenda, one on same-sex marriage and one on medical marijuana are both completely up in the air, though 75% of the votes are counted (each is a 52/48 proposition at the moment).

Btw, the same-sex marriage ban in AZ is in trouble too - with 92% of the vote counted it's currently failing, by a 52-48 margin.

The results in arizona, virgina (ban on same sex marriage) and 45% of South Dakotans wanting to ban abortion makes it seem like conservatism is alive and kicking in diverse parts of the country. its funny how liberals think there could not be more than 3 or 4 people in shacks in Utah who actually disagree with liberal "truths". 45 % saying no to almost any abortion reveals the SCOTUS' anoitment of abortion as a fundamental right traditionally recognized as the authoritarian power grab it was and continues to be.

How in the hell is conservativism "kicking" when their red meat issues go down at the polls in states that are vastly more Republican than the country at large?

Bush's '04 margin in Arizona was three or four times his nation-wide margin, and in SD he won by well over 20 points. These aren't states that are representative of the country as a whole, they are "red" with a capital R. And if the religious right can't get its pet issues through at the polls in places like that, it would seem that their influence is waning - and clearly their views aren't in-line with those of the nation as a whole.

And of course there's polling done on abortion-related issues all the time, and the country has long been, and clearly remains, pro-choice. The remarkable thing about the SD vote is that that's true in even one of the most Republican states in the country.

it's not so much the results, as it is the trends that matter.
