This makes me thing of ankle socks with pumps and Joe Jackson...

...and that pair of Wayfarers that I left on the beach. That's when I used to listen to the King Biscuit Flower Hour in my bedroom, tuned in to WSHE 103.5, "She's Only Rock and Roll" out of Miami.

There certainly is some of that 80s goodness (?) in the list of live shows available. How about a little Psychedelic Furs, Devo, or Duran Duran (oh that Simon Le Bon... you can almost hear him prance!). And then you can balance your fluff with the Clash and Steve Earle. Grateful Dead? Got it. And there is plenty of what you grew up on, including Pink Floyd, .38 Special, and some Led Zeppelin from 1969 with such pure sound quality it's hard to believe.

Dio! How could I forget Dio?

You know, I know you're not that much older than me - but every so often you bring up a topic that makes me feel like you were part of an earlier generation. Though maybe you just liked better (or a wider variety of) music. :)

Though ... Dio? I'd never heard of him until he was featured in an episode of South Park.

It is true that I have massively eclectic musical influences. But I also think it's that I was a "baby" who had significantly older siblings and you were the oldest child. My sibs were born in the mid 1950s, and I was born at the turn of the 1970s, so I teethed on Led Zeppelin.

my good friend, who is more or less my age (early 30's, let's say somewhat generously), has a much deeper knowledge of 70's rock due to the bond he formed with a "cool" uncle who was a teenager when said friend was a tot. really, it's amazing how much he remembered and retained of that era, and how fluent he is in it now both as a mash-up DJ and an afficianado.

for my part, i'm far better with obscure hippy shit from the 60's, because my parents were still immersed in it when i was little. i'm not as good with bands and songs and albums, but every so often a movie will dredge up something really obscure from that era and it'll be like instant choking-back-tears for me, the nostalgia for early childhood sort of breathtaking. i keep swearing i'm going to sit down with my dad's mostly unused vinyl, and start playing and writing things down so i can find them whenever i convert to ipod, or alternatively try to track them down on CD. maybe this christmas.
