Oscar Fashion

So I know what you thought was the real reason the pretty congregated last night, right? To show off their prettiness in really pretty clothes! So with that in mind, which dresses did you like best? And which were, ummm, not best? Showbuzz has a lot of the gowns here. I know Binky liked Penelope Cruz's and our favorite GU Law student was high on Jodie Foster's (and I liked both of those dressess too). Other than those my three favorites in that particular slideshow were those worn by Helen Mirren, Cate Blanchett and Kate Winslet (yes apparently American women can't dress). And I've got a strangely positive reaction to Emily Blunt's. Strangely because I'm not crazy about the dress itself (is anyone else thinking, Love Boat?) - but I think it's absolutely perfect on her, and frames her features beautifully.

As to outfits not in that photo gallery - I liked Ellen's red velvet, Clive Owen's black dressing down, and Rachel Weisz ... mmm ... Rachel Weisz ... sorry lost my train of thought there, oh, and ... one of the other male presenters had a gorgeous tux, but I've completely forgotten who that was.

As to the misses of the evening - I'd put Nicole Kidman and that red monster on her shoulder atop that list. Well, other than that silly jacket Jennifer Hudson was wearing (what - was she at a yard sale thrown by a former Solid Gold dancer?).

What did you think? Don't hold back the bitchiness. That's what the Monday after is all about, right?

I forgot those 2 deep purple dresses worn by Portia di Rossi and Reese W. I liked both of those (especially Portia's), though I wasn't big on Reese's overall look (the hair? ehhhh ... no).

foster's dress might have been nice, but i HATE the hair, and it makes it difficult to see anything else about her.

i haven't seen any photos of weisz yet, but i'll like her, as i do planchett, in pretty much anything.

We can't forgot uber-misses Anne Hathaway with the symmetry of her front and back giant black bows or Kirsten Dunst with that feather-y high collared mesh pale green abomination.

Ewww, yeah, the Hathaway dress. What a smart move - distract us away from your pretty face and picture-perfect smile by some weird mess on your chest that leaves us confused.

Moon, I'll be interested to hear your take on Weisz. I liked her general look a lot - and it not only included a lovely gown, but most unusual hair for her.

And good lord Ryan - I'd totally missed seeing the Dunst dress last night, so I just went to Go Fug Yourself to see what you were talking about - and YIKES. That thing's ... atrocious? Hideous? The product of a designer with split personalities AND questionable taste? Egads.

I must the only person who didn't hate the Hathaway dress. I thought it suited her style, which is a bit conservative, a little old fashioned, but still cute and figure flattering. Then again, I don't think she has a pretty face. Not that I think she's ugly, mind you, I just don't think "hathaway, aha the one with the pretty face." She's a nice looking young woman overall, always well put together but never edgy. And she doesn't have to hang it all out there. I bet she was perfectly comfortable too (unlike some of those gals who looked like sitting down was not an option).

And la Dunst... what a shame. There are parts of that dress that I like, several in fact, including the color and the midsection. I even like the top, just not attached to the rest of the dress. I see the top as a top, paired with slinky black pants. And the bodice down as the dress, with either spaghetti straps or even strapless. I think the color was good, and it looked nice with her lipstick. The hair, however, was stupid.

Ugly. Well. Eddie Muphy's whoever she is not baby mama ex spice girl had on something hideous. It looked like it was out of Tron or some sci-fi movie where people wear rubber outfits. Ick. I also didn't like Jessica Biel's hot pink number. She's totally hot, but that dress didn't make her stand out at all, and the hair didn't flatter her face. I don't get the love for Emily Blunt's outfit. It overshadowed her, not in a good way, and made her look plain. Beyonce, nem fala, especially with the weird pose. What the hell was up with Kelly Preston? She's attractive, but that dress stuck out like a sore thumb. Oh, and gag me with the five strands of grecian bodice draping Jennifer Lopez. Yuck. Unlike this crowd I cannot get behind Portia de Rossi, much as I like her. She violates the pointy rule, and the dress hung on her in an unattractive way. Reese was pointy too, but fierce enough to carry the dress, I think, even though it (along with Cameron Diaz's) reminded me a bit too much of the years 1986-1989.

Other people's ugly with which I disagree... Meryl Streep. I think she looks good and quirky and independent. To me her outfit said "I have a house at Taos and I don't give a fug what you think but I'll be comfy through the ceremony and just make one comment about my Prada and I will wilt you with my acting chops." I liked it, and she can wear whatever she wants. I liked Jada Pinkett. THe color was perfect, and she could kick your ass, and the showed it. I also disagree with GFY on Keisha Whitaker, but that may be because I like unusual. I also like Imogen Heap and her floral headwear, so sue me. Normally I love Kate Winslet, and I did think she looked like a yummy slice of key lime pie, but whoever did her make up left her looking washed out. As always, becautiful, stylish, handsome woman... just wasn't the perfect combo to me because often she shines and last night looked a bit wan. I thought both Gwynneth Paltrow and Eva Green looked good. Eva's a bit weird, and I like it! I wasn't totally keen on Maggie Gyllenhal's dress (something crumply but not on purpose going on in the middle) but it was a great color, I liked the hem and loved the color on her, and her makeup was perfect. I'm surprised no one has mentioned Zhang Ziyi, who goes for wedding cake. I like this one, which is a bit understated compared to normal, and she looks really buff. Clearly I have a preference for women who eat, and have the confidence working and/or ass-kicking ability.

Top five (no particular order) are Cate Blanchett, Rachael Weicsz, Helen Mirren (totally sexy with her big "bottom"), Jada Pinkett, and Penelope Cruz (though I thought she could have softened her hair a bit... that bun was a bit too severe even though it does accentuate the Sophia Loren similarity).

As to dudes and dude-wear, I loved Ellen's first tux. Fantastic. And I thought Djimoun Hunsou looked fabulous. Some of my favorites weren't there (Depp), but Sasha baron Cohen looked great, as did Mark Wahlberg (classic look).

Actually I agree with you on Streep. At a certain level I never like what she wears - but then again, I often rather admire how she wears it. And sure, parts of Dunst's dress were cute. The problem was they had no business whatsoever being attached to other parts of that dress. And yeah, Kelly Preston - what can you say beyond "yikes"?

And I have no problem whatsoever with your top 5. All quite reasonable choices, including a number of my favorites. And even in the case of my least favorite of those (Pinkett's), I still liked the color a lot, and the dress a fair bit - I just thought it was cut a bit severely.

i'm out of my depth on this, but in response to this comment "[Hathaway's] a nice looking young woman overall, always well put together but never edgy. And she doesn't have to hang it all out there," clearly you've never seen Havoc (note the language attached to the R rating: "Rated R for strong sexual content, nudity, pervasive language, violence, drug and alcohol use - all involving teens."). goodness, very few Disney queens have broken away from the mouse so forcefully. although lest you take this for an endorsement, i should be clear that unless seeing some pretty disturbing nude scenes involving both hathaway and bijou phillips trumps putting up with really hackneyed writing and a cliched story, i don't recommend the movie. hathaway actually shows some depth as an actress (and shows quite a bit more as well), and freddy garcia does the best he can with the character given him, but overall it's a mess.

oops -- i meant freddy rodriguez.

That's a role, though.

fair enough, but i'm not going to concede the, er, point.

Posted by: moon at February 27, 2007 06:20 PM | PERMALINK

Clearly, I have been watching the wrong award shows.
