What's With Sullivan and Ambinder's Blogrolls?

Lately I probably spend more time at The Atlantic's blogs than any other blogs. Between Yglesias, Sullivan and Ambinder they've got an insightful set of talent posting on a wide array of things political - and posting a nearly endless set of stories and links throughout the day (and of course they've got Douthat and Fallows blogging for them too, but Fallows posts infrequently and I don't check Douthat as often). So I like the place. But I've got one question about it. Why on Earth is the first link in both Sullivan's and Ambinder's blogroll the uber-hack Matt Drudge? Really ... why?

Because everybody reads Drudge. And because love him or hate him, Drudge was a pioneer, and he still breaks the occasional plum every now and then -- albeit usually spoon-fed plums, to be sure.

In Sullivan's case, Drudge kind of helped his blog get launched way back in 1998 or whenever, so there may be a sense of debt involved.

Honestly? People still read Drudge? Well, I know some (lazy) reporters and/or news producers do, given the tendency of the press to follow whatever news (or nonsense) he has up on his page on any particular day ... but is there really ever anything there worth linking to? I haven't hit that site in months or quite possibly years since most of is misleading, planted, or covered 10 times better on some other blog (or some combination of the 3). Or at least that's what it was like back when I used to check it. Has he suddenly become much more insightful or a more capable muckraker?

No, but there's always the chance that he might.

And yeah, people still hit his page once or twice a day, I think.

Including Elizabeth Edwards.
