Clinton Won't Release Her Tax Returns Unless She's the Nominee?

So I can see a candidate making an argument against releasing her tax returns at all, and I can see a candidate releasing them early in order to show transperancy and a lack of corruption - but I'm really unclear on why a candidate would argue that it's appropriate to only release her tax returns after she's won her party's nomination. That would seem especially problematic in the case of this candidate given that Republicans will be sure to be talking about the Rose law firm billing, cattle futures, and President Clinton's money-making since 2000, as soon as she releases them during the general election campaign. Nonetheless, that's what the Clinton team says they are going to do.

You just can't stand her, can you?

It's less that than 1) I can't stand the thought of having to hear about "them" for another 4-8 years, and 2) I think Obama stands a much better chance of changing the country for the better, and being a better liberal president.

I don't have much against her as a person, except insofar as I think she threw away some of her finest principles in the mid-1990s and has become a disappointing, insecure, triangulating, Mark Penn-esque political figure.

Oh, and as to posts like this one or the one on pimping/David Schuster or the posts on Obama's big caucus results - I don't think she's really all that good of a politician. Which of course relates to my preference for Obama.

I'm lost as to why anyone would take this position; releasing tax info only if they become the nominee?

I'm partial to Obama for the same reasons Armand is; I think Obama has a greater chance of shaking things up in DC (which has needed a shake-up). Clinton's sometimes-bizarre campaigning (buying an hour on the Hallmark channel?) isn't making me like her any better.

But I'll vote for her over McCain.

She seems to enjoy shooting herself in the foot. There is no logical rationale as to why she would make this statement.

She'll never release 'em. This just punts the controversy down the road a bit -- if she doesn't win the nomination, no harm done; if she does, she can plead VRWC and continue to sit on them.

Whether you like her or not, you've got to admit that the Clintons have a long history of receiving rough treatment following financial disclosures. She just can't release 'em, ever, given what's likely to be in there and the shitstorm any weirdness will induce. But saying that now might well lead to a few news cycles bogged down in a review of past unpleasantness. She can't afford that, not (at least) for a few months yet.

Yeah, and maybe it's unfair. Maybe a lot of the coverage of the campaign is unfair to her. But like it or not that's how she's going to be covered. And it's one of the reasons I'm pro-Obama (though not the central reason) - all the baggage the Clintons will bring with them to the White House will inevitably make it harder to take advantage of the rare situation Democrats will otherwise have before them (a Democratic House, a Democratic Senate, and Supreme Court retirements).
