Mark Begich Forms an Exploratory Committee

What was already looking like a good year for the Democrats in the fall Senate races got better today. Anchorage mayor Mark Begich filed papers to form an exploratory committee. So it looks like he's going to take on Ted Stevens, the scandal-tarred senior Republican in the Senate. Early polling has Begich ahead, which is rather stunning given that Alaska is extremely Republican, and Stevens has long been a political titan in both the state and in DC (he used to chair the Appropriations Committee, and only 3 senators have served longer - Robert Byrd, Ted Kennedy and Daniel Inouye). But to me this race looks like the Roth-Carper race from 2000, and the Democrats have an unusually good shot here this year with Begich as the nominee.

Oh, and for the trivia-minded among you, should Stevens lose, Richard Lugar will be the senior Republican in the next Senate.

Are you just slightly missinformed or totally ignorant of our political landscape? It's Mark Begich, not "Nick Begich" who announced that he is forming an exploratory committee to test the waters of public opinion prior to contesting the Senate seat held for 40 years by Ted Stevens.
FYI, Nick Begich was the late father of Mark and the former Congressional Representative from Alaska who disappeared while flying from Anchorage to Juneau in 1972. If your blog is to have any credibility at all, it might behove you to first get your facts straight.

Happily corrected.

Coming from Louisiana when I see "Begich" I naturally think of Nick Begich since Hale Boggs died on that flight too - so after a few decades of always seeing "Nick" in front of Begich I might well slip up from time to time when typing that name. If you think that fundamentally undermines our credibility, hey that's up to you.
