The AFI's 10 Top 10 Lists

AFI took it upon themselves to list the top 10 films in 10 film genres. Predictably, some of those listed are highly questionable choices. Mystery though includes lots of great movies (hmm, I should really watch Laura again), so I guess that's the genre for me.

They are really stretching the definition of "fantasy" in that category...

Yeah, I agree with Ryan - Miracle on 34th Street? Huh?

That said, any list that includes Groundhog Day has some merit.

It's pretty clear to me, at least, that AFI was using fantasy in the broad, traditional sense, rather than the narrow, something-that-looks-and-plays-like-LOTR-and-appeals-disproporionately-to-pasty-gamers sense that has become common parlance vis-a-vis movies. For purposes of classification, it might be more apt to put the latter under Epic, or Gaudy FX Extravaganzas or some such, because I certainly agree that Mo34th and Groundhog Day, etc., don't deserve to be measured beside, well, Krull, but at the same time there has to be something for the fantastical, because it's a major genre in cinema. Groundhog Day isn't science fiction, because it posits nothing scientific; for that matter, Star Wars isn't science fiction, either.

For my part, I'm just baffled that they didn't do Horror. I was looking forward to seeing The Shining as a third (or fourth), very high rating (well deserved) for Kubrick, alongside 2001 and A Clockwork Orange (fourth in parentheses, because I'm thinking Ben Hur was there, too). Alas, no such luck.

I get the point - and I said I liked Groundhog Day. Which I do very much. And sure it fits. But all that said, Mo34th still seems barely fantasy. I guess there is one shot in the movie that seems to want to make it fantasy ... but the cold cynic in me still has some trouble with that classification. Maybe it should be on a top 10 holiday movie list though.
