The Case AGAINST Crist?

This is the worst Chris Cillizza can come up with? He's an ambitious, populist pol who's happy to twist his views to fit with McCain? When did that become a net minus? And Cillizza thinks the country wants national politicians who are workhorses and not showhorses? That's news to me. Unless Crist can't be vetted I'd say he's the Republicans' strongest possible Veep nominee.

"McCain has made his political name by his willingness to stand by unpopular positions; his fight against his own party on campaign finance reform and his push for Republicans to acknowledge the perils posed by global warming burnished his independent/maverick credentials with voters even as it angered many within the party."

I'm so sick of hearing this garbage. It might have been true in 2000 and 2004, but to the extent it was, I'm now quite convinced it wasn't conviction so much as his best shot to win the nom -- by appealing to independent and leftish conservatives who were a little uncomfortable with the movement con alternative. Now, however, it's time to race to the right, and suddenly all of that principle and straight talk has proved utterly ephemeral. Although kudos to McCain for still taking unpopular positions, albeit different ones than he took a few years ago. Or a few weeks ago. And of course all of this only pertains to those areas where he knows his positions. In other areas -- Viagra / birth control insurance parity; whether to seek the outright reversal of Roe v. Wade -- he's discovered that the best way not to reverse yourself is to have no clue at all.

Seems to me, a sutted shirt with a beatific smile is exactly what McCain needs, to cover for his utter lack of style. Of course, he risks being overmatched, but at this point he might struggle not to be by any Veep on his short list.

What's Dan Quayle doing these days?
