The Palin Pick - Does It Reinforce Obama's Judgment Argument?

One of the true delights of this election season has been watching how it's transformed Jack Cafferty - how the Republicans continue to push him around the bend, and how he quite forthrightly makes that clear to one and all. It's fun to watch - like seeing an old uncle getting riled up at Thanksgiving. And on this, I've got think he's right - and that could be important if swing voters start to look at it that way.

Let's suppose that that phone rings at 3am in the morning and either Joe Biden or Sarah Palin has to answer it. You tell me. After this pick, ask yourself again who has the better judgment, John McCain or Barack Obama.

The emerging story suggests that McCain lurched and chose Palin on a snap judgement after various GOP elders nixed the Joementum idea. Almost like a tantrum.

I do wonder if Romney was the second choice and backed out, thinking of 2012. That would be an interesting story to poke around.

I heard that the Romney and Pawlenty campings were "extremely unhappy" about the pick.

You know the more I'm thinking about this pick, 36 hours later, I think that really we should stop talking about Palin. Yes, she seems not-ready-for-primetime and in league with Buchananites and Christianists.

The real story here is McCain picking her. His whole campaign is experience and war-fightin' ability. She's who he wants to lead the war on terrorism? And he'd pick as someone to lead that war someone he barely knows and has only met once? People can make all the jokes they want about her being mayor of Mayberry, but per the norm it's the top of the ticket that matters. And I think it's the combo of hits on McCain's judgment, his temperment and who he's beholden to (the Christianists) that could make this a serious problem for his campaign. It makes him look like a flighty hypocrite about grave matters of state. We should focus our fire on him, not her.
