Bloodless Coup

I only just noticed this. So which fetishizing side you prefer: a party that fetishizes the flag as embodying all that the most reactionary 12% of the country think is dear (and you better too, motherf*%ker) or the party that thinks patriotism has more content than a mere symbol.

Every flat in the world isn't going to help you if dissent is decried as treason instead of engaged as the healthy debate that fuels any sound democracy. Every totalitarian movement has its fetishized symbol, too.

(The point being not that we're a totalitarian state, although not for lack of trying by the few worst offenders, but that such festishes are not, ipso facto, healthy. They're just fetishes.

(Not that I expect Morris to heed my caveat, since then he'd have to explain why we've heard much more from McCain since the Palin appointment about what we can't talk about (foreign policy; explanations for apparent bald-faced lies regarding political record) than I have about how he, and the woman who replaces him when he croaks, would govern -- except that evidently they'd do it with God's blessing, and according to one interpretation of the new testament, with just enough old testament thrown in to impugh "others" but not so much as to hold the faithful to account for their own sins).)
