Highly Offensive

That's what this is, evidently, to someone who lives on my block.

This week I received from the city a notice that I was in violation of city code for "excessive weeds" and "obstructed sidewalk." Look again at the distressing weeds obstructing the sidewalk. I'll wait. Find them yet? Yeah, I couldn't either.

Apparently someone has complained. Neighborhood intel suggests that it was the neighbor up one house (in the picture, the one with the flag on the porch). I have written about this neighbor before. There are many things I could say about this fine citizen, especially his problems with dumping his yard waste into the street/my driveway and his failure to retrieve dog feces (both violations of city ordinance), but what I am left with is the thought that some people really don't have enough to do.

Good lord, what I would give to have a front walk that looked that nice. Maybe he could move next door to me and contend with a dead lawn and squabbling chickens instead!

My parents contend with a similar neighbor, who's convinced that the business they run out of their house is noncompliant with the (snooty) affluent suburb ordinances at issue. So every six months or so, my parents get a surprise visit from the town (thanks to an "anonymous" complaint system), and have to, or perhaps for simplicity's sake simply choose to, let him look around, whereupon he finds things exactly as they were last time, which is to say compliant, if only by a thin margin, with the relevant laws. I'll tell you what I told my father: there has to be some harassment law that applies to this sort of serial bulls(*t, and you ought to decide where your line is. You're not powerless here by any means. And at some point it's time to fire back.

Well, I had a nice chat with the code enforcement people today. They basically don't care about aesthetics, and don't want to get pushed around by snippy neighbors. So the guy said, essentially, just make sure nothing overhangs the sidewalk and it's all good.

More nastygrams! The neighbors must have called again. People suck.
