Team McCain - Candidates' Wives Are Fair Game!

So says the McCain campaign. This is quite simply a batshit crazy move. It would give the media free rein to write up stories on Todd Palin's treasonous political associations, and on the inappropriate role he played as a political enforcer for his wife. It would give the media room to write stories on how Mrs. McCain became Mrs. McCain (adultery), her drug problem, the questionable means through which her family made its money, the legal issues she's had with her half-sister ... all in order to smear Mrs. Obama "if it is true" . They don't even have evidence of a friendly acquaintance between Obama and Dohrn and they are opening this door. Yes, I go back to my earlier judgment of this move - it's batshit crazy (on top of being insulting, tasteless, and a prime example of gutter politics).

I'm also rolling around on the floor laughing at the notion that Sidley Austin is some sort of haven for terrorists and terrorist sympathizers. Why any reporter would even bother listening to Murtaugh after saying that, I have no idea.

Either this was unsanctioned by the campaign high command or they just don't think Obama will respond in kind. I mean, yes, Cindy's story is certainly interesting, but Todd Palin was in a freaking secessionist militia group!

Forget about Sidley Austin as madrassa, although that's pretty damned funny. Focus on the lack of concrete association. I don't know how big the Chicago office was, but I've been at an office of 50+ lawyers for six months now, and I've met, or heard anything interesting about, no more than two dozen spouses -- of lawyers and support staff combined, which means more like 150 people. And prior to a recent firmwide social event we had, I'd met like 3, and maybe knew something about a few more.

It's a law firm, not a tea party. And ours is probably more social than many.

Well I think they are correct in assuming that the Obama campaign won't respond in kind, even regarding Todd Palin's shocking political views. But I think that the "fair and balanced" nonsense has (sadly) taken such deep roots in the media that more than a few reporters will feel they should throw negative statements about Cindy McCain or Todd Palin into any negative comments they make about Michelle Obama.

Though of course many reporters will openly mock and condemn this, and that's not going to win any new voters to McCain.
