The Golden Globe Nominees

Anything strike you out of these?

I'm thrilled to see the recognition for In Bruges, Brendan Gleeson and Robert Downey Jr. The Meryl Streep nomination for Mamma Mia! is horrifying, if predictable. And when it comes to the tv picks, the True Blood nomination is weird, but fun

True Blood isn't fun, it's discrediting of the whole process. That piece of junk isn't best anything. Ditto, Paquin's performance therein. Seriously? That accent? It sounds like mediocre college play level dialect. It's horrible.

Similarly, the utter omission of Synecdoche, New York from all major categories (especially screenplay -- it's one of the most ambitious, and well-executed screenplays I've ever seen produced) is downright hilarious. Who are these yahoos, anyway?

Oh I didn't mean to suggest that I think the nomination has merit or that the show is good. I can barely stand it. I suppose what I meant was that the nomination was funny.

And since the Globes are often mocked for being less that serious (and yes, foreign yahoos), well, it seems fitting with their usual approach to these things (as is their Streep worship).

And Synecdoche hasn't made a lot of the awards lists made so far. It has worshipful fans, but for whatever reason it's not catching on as broadly as Milk, Doubt, Frost/Nixon or even The Reader.

Who else was surprised by the Mickey Rourke nod? Really? Him? I really want to see Last Chance Harvey, but from the article I read about it, I thought its release date wasn't until February. Hmm... And, please God, don't let Miley Cyrus be nominated for an Oscar. I've had it up to here with her.

I was thinking Harvey was going to be a Christmas release - but really as long as it opens somewhere in the US this calendar year, I presume it qualifies.

And Rourke has been winning massive praise for that role all year. He's already picked up notable critics and festival prizes.
