The 2009 Oscar Nominations

They are coming in right now - and Kate Winslet is nominated for Best Actress for The Reader, not Revolutionary Road! So she obviously isn't a double nominee this year. Remember she won the Supporting prize at The Golden Globes for The Reader. Daldry's The Reader also snagged Best Director and Best Picture nominations.

Sorry, I know I'm a one-note guy this award season, but that none of the women in Synecdoche, New York got supporting noms, and that the screenplay didn't get a nim for best original . . . well, I'm sure it's a movie with a polarizing effect on people aesthetically, as you and I illustrated in our back and forth, but to deny the screenplay the nom for sheer inventiveness is in my view outrageous.

Hmmm, perhaps. But In Bruges did get nominated in that category - so they got something very right there too. And I've heard mostly raves about the screenplays of Frozen River and Happy-Go-Lucky and WALL-E too. I've head some negative things about Milk's - but more positive than negative(which is good, since I assume it's the favorite here). Anyway, if In Bruges is in Synecdoche's spot - I don't mind.

And yeah, Morton and Williams are probably the two best supporting actress performances I've seen this year (at least that come to mind) - so it's a shame they were snubbed.

Of course the big news is the failure of The Dark Knight to score a nomination for Picture or Director or Screenplay. The Academy didn't follow the money.

Just noticed song. How in the hell was Springsteen's song for The Wrestler not nominated? I figured it would win the thing. And nothing for High School Musical 3? Poor Ryan and Sharpay.
