So it looks like last night Gov. Paterson kicked Caroline Kennedy to the curb. Who will the new nominee be then? Halperin has a list of possibilities. I'm betting it'll be Kirsten Gillibrand. Off Halperin's list, I'd rather it was Brian Higgins or Steve Israel or maybe Byron Brown (I don't know anything about Randi Weingarten). I'll be most annoyed if it's Andrew Cuomo.

Naming her opens up a House district that is more Republican than Democratic. This pick was so about balancing the ticket Paterson hopes to be a part of in 2010. But in the process he's picked a nominee who is sure to be primaried, and sown division in the party - which could certainly endanger his ability to remain on that ticket. This was not a savvy choice, no matter how good a fundraiser she is, nor how close she is to Schumer, Cuomo and the Clintons.

But I do agree there isn't a whole lot to recommend her in and of herself.
