I don't remember there being any question about Ashcroft's willful breaking of the law at his confirmation hearings. And both Byrd may feel that a Chief Executive is mostly entitled to his cabinet picks, unless they demonstrate a record that calls into question their integrity.
Now, under present circumstances, I don't care where they find the guys for the task of righting the economy, and if Geithner's the guy for the job, then he's the guy. But I don't see why these votes are all that perplexing.
