Which two Democratic senators voted for confirming John Ashcroft as Attorney General but against confirming Timothy Geithner as Treasury Secretary? The answer is below.

Just for argument's sake, that record could be entirely principled. I don't remember there being any question about Ashcroft's willful breaking of the law at his confirmation hearings. And both Byrd may feel that a Chief Executive is mostly entitled to his cabinet picks, unless they demonstrate a record that calls into question their integrity.

Now, under present circumstances, I don't care where they find the guys for the task of righting the economy, and if Geithner's the guy for the job, then he's the guy. But I don't see why these votes are all that perplexing.

it's just a rare combination, that's all. and feingold voted for lots of bush people for the reason you state (deferrence to the president) - but he didn't follow that here.
