Massachusetts Sues the US Over DOMA

Well, it's finally happened. The AG of Massachusetts is suing the United States, arguing that DOMA's definition of marriage is discriminatory, and that the law steps into matters traditionally left to the states. Is this the right time to start this fight? With this Supreme Court? I don't know. But it'll obviously be something worth watching closely.

It's the right time from the point of view of the 2010 MA governor's race...

Well, there is that. :) And of course her name is in the mix for the Kennedy seat too.

A Senate seat would be a BIG leap for Martha. Better to let Deval or Mike Capuano or somebody else claim it, and then do a couple terms as governor while she waits for Kerry to fade out.

Well word is that's where her interests lie. And anyone looking to wait out John Kerry might be waiting quite some time. Apart from chairmen who were defeated or died in office or who became Vice President (Biden), no chairman of Foreign Relations has retired before he was in his late 70s, at the earliest, since ... well, I have no idea - but not in well over 100 years. And Kerry's only 65.

And yeah, I assume Capuano and maybe another member of the House or two will be interested as well (even though anyone of them who'd run is already well into their 50s or 60s). But at least for now, I understand that's what she's aiming toward.

I know a guy who's a... what's the phrase... "Democratic operative", I guess. He's somewhat close to her, and very attuned to the directions of the winds. I'll inquire.
