The Best of John Hughes

There are lots of lists being created following the death of the man who defined the 1980s for a lot of white teens. But to me Sixteen Candles stands clearly atop the rest of his work. Disagree?

I'll throw my vote in for Pretty in Pink. "Blaine? His name is Blaine? That's not a name, that's a major appliance!" But I'd say all the movies in the Ringwald Trifecta rock.

I'd probably put that #3 with Vacation as #2. Of course I haven't seen Mr. Mom and Weird Science in forever, so it's hard to say what I think of them (liked 'em years ago, but ...).

Is Ferris really getting no attention here? I'm with Kiki in principle -- that is, I don't know that I could choose a favorite among the Ringwald trilogy -- but if I had to try I'd probably go with Breakfast Club. I got caught by that one, as though on a hook, one Saturday afternoon a while ago. It was on one of the cable networks, but pan and scan with ads. Normally nothing could get me under those circumstances. But it got me, from where I hit it to the end, other plans be damned. Even Ferris doesn't do that to me anymore.

Honestly, I don't think Ferris holds up terribly well. Parts of it do - Cameron & Rooney/Grace/the high school stuff especially, to my eyes. But, personally, I think it's dated.
