Well, this ought to calm things down in the Middle East

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad quoted a remark from Ayatollah Khomeini, founder of Iran's Islamic revolution, that Israel "must be wiped out from the map of the world." The president then said: "And God willing, with the force of God behind it, we shall soon experience a world without the United States and Zionism.

Update: Just after posting this, I saw that Dan Drezner was already on the job.

Same old same old. As the post and comments at Drezner's site notes, ever since the revolution, the Iranian regime as been performing a semi-permanent Wag the Dog campaign to keep people's minds off their disasterous economic policies.

Hmmm. Bankrupt the country, piss off a lot of the best educated and productive types, repress dissent, give the national government new police powers, distract the masses with trumped-up actions against foreign enemies - maybe it's not just Fidel's playbook that the Iranians are following. :)
