The BAFTA Nominations

So the BAFTA nominations came out last week. These are basically the British version of the Oscars, and most of the films and performances on their lists are pretty similar to the lists of "bests" we've been seeing on this side of the Atlantic (lots of honors for Brokeback Mountain, Crash, The Constant Gardener, Good Night, and Good Luck, etc.). One category did stand out to me though. If you scroll down to the nominees for Best Supporting Actor, what do you find? You find two guys from Crash, Jake Gyllenhaal, George Clooney and George Clooney. Yeah, you read that right. George Clooney AND George Clooney. He was nominated twice in the same category (once for Good Night, and Good Luck and once for Syriana). That being the case, I'm guessing that when the Supporting Actor prize is handed out Mr. Clooney will have to be content with the honor of a nomination - or in this case, two nominations. But never fear Clooney fans. He's s nominated for two other BAFTA's as well (directing, screenplay), so maybe he'll take home one of those prizes.

Heath and Jake are nominated! I don't think I've ever enjoyed "movies" as much as I have the past couple of months. Oscar where are you?

John your point brings to mind something about Fred Phelps' latest bit of hate-filled insanity - the claim, noted on lots of sites in the last couple of days that West Virginia is the most vile and putrid God-hating place on Earth - a place even worse than San Francisco.

To which I reply - how gay-supportive can this state be if it STILL doesn't have Brokeback Mountain, not even after it topped the Golden Globe awards (which of course are given by gay-friendly foreigners!).

I really can't get my head around the fact that that bozo is going to come and protest WVU's gay pride week.

Armand,

The key word here is insanity. Some people are so spiritually dead and their lives are so empty that hate fills a void for them. Unfortunately, violence and death are usually the final result we get from this hate. I don't argue with people like Phelps. I simply do my thing and that usually garners respect. Live free. You hold the keys to your gilded cage.
