Senators Boxer and Sessions: United Against "Guest Workers"

Rarely do I notice that I agree with both Barbara Boxer and Jeff Sessions when it comes to a major legislative initiative. So it seems a noteworthy week since I strongly agree with both of them that a guest worker program is a horrible idea. I'd say it's perhaps the worst thing in any of the proposed (and remotely passable) immigration bills currently before Congress. Sadly, the great majority of senators though disagree with me, Boxer and Sessions.

I'm not following this issue closely enough to opine, but what do you propose in its stead? Surely the status quo leaves something to be desired.

Surely. But there was a post over at The Reality-Based Community some days ago on this, and I've got to say I agree with it. I can see how people would support greatly expanding the border patrol and enforcement (though I think the fence is a silly and far too costly proposal), and I can see a case for "amnesty". But I can't see any case for "guest workers" beyond a desire to promote the profit margins of some the largest US corporations. On social, moral and a lot of economic grounds it strikes me as a repulsive proposal. Just what is the rationale, other than fostering the growth of an unassimilated underclass and making sure Big Business can pay the lowest wages imagineable?

Btw, kind of non sequitir, am I the only person who thinks of Murder by Death when this comes up (Lionel Twain smuggling rich Americans across the border to pick melons in Mexico)?
