The Preakness

I won't be watching it as it seems every person I know with cable is out of town this weekend. I won't be betting either. I think Barbaro will win, and if he doesn't it'll be one of the other two horses that ran in the Derby. No good prices there. But if Barbaro wins - exciting! You'd have to think that someday another horse will win the Triple Crown and why not this year? Barbaro looked great two weeks ago. [Why not? B/c Brother Derek had a dreadful trip in the Derby and Barbaro will be facing grueling back to back races at a rate he's never had to run before ... but hey, it's still possible].

Barbaro's probably badly injured - that's sad.

And Bernardini wins in only his 4th race! Interesting. A big talented horse with a great pedigree (a son of A.P. Indy) that some of those in the know (like Steve Haskins) liked a lot - but I just couldn't see a horse starting only his 4th race beating the likes of Barbaro and Brother Derek. Well, Barbaro got injured - and Bernardini wins.

My heart's breaking for Barbaro and his humans; I just hope they can save the big guy's life. I love horseracing, and thoroughbreds, but my God they've sure bred those poor beasts to be at once over-powered yet physically fragile.

Congrats to Bernardi and his jockey, for running a very intelligent race. I feel bad for them, too, their well-deserved victory overshadowed by tragedy.
