Do It Again! Do It Again!

Baltar and Binky, given their love for Firefly, are now watching the early seasons of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I've watched a few of those early episodes again too - and it's striking to me how important Spike and Drusilla were to getting that show off the ground and taking it to a new level. They provided many of the series's best moments in season 2. Respect for Spike - well there's loads of that among Buffy fans. But having seen some of these episodes again, I don't think there's enough appreciation for what Drusilla brought to the series. Her combination of whimsy, weakness, black humor and true cruelty was capitivating - and as played by Ms. Landau, well, I never wanted to take my eyes off her when she was on screen. She was great.

And it's all your fault, damn you. If you hadn't been raving about Buffy for years...

Not to mention that I seem to recall a certain someone whose pseudonym begins with "A" borrowing Firefly. Hmm?

Oddly enough though, it's lowly Xander who spoke the line that's sticking with me from that last set of episodes I watched: "I intend revenge - pure as the driven snow"

Ah - the classic days when Xander was funny and not fat...truly good times that I will be watching for many years to come.

Xander gets fat?

Well, he certainly gets chunkier - though of course he ages considerably over that time (he was in his early 30's by the time the series ended), and increased chunkitude often happens to ex-baseball players as they age.

I apologize heartily for the spoiler binky, clearly I wasn't thinking ;)

No worries. It's just that in the shows I've been watching recently, he's been getting skinnier, so the idea that he got fat seemed like a major shift. I think I might have been thinking Fat Albert fat too. Not that it really matters of course. One of the things I actually liked about the unseen pilot that has been up on YouTube is that Willow wasn't a hottie. Don't get me wrong, I like Willow the hottie, and think that this actress is way better than the actress in the unaired pilot. But I did like that the actress in the pilot looked like Ricky Lake circa Hairspray. That is, like a real person.

Then, of course, I slapped myself, remembering that this was TV, and everyone is rich thin and (conventionally) beautiful, except when they're not due to some contrived plot twist. For examples see, oh, the first three seasons of the L-Word.
