Stupidity on the March

Or, Harry Potter is evil, part 10,376:

Laura Mallory, a mother of four, told a hearing officer for the Gwinnett County Board of Education on Tuesday that the popular fiction books are an ''evil'' attempt to indoctrinate children in the Wicca religion.

And we all know the next step is becoming a lesbian.

Board of Education attorney Victoria Sweeny said that if schools were to remove all books containing reference to witches, they would have to ban ''Macbeth'' and ''Cinderella.''

Well, duh, of course not, because those books show witches as evil nasty crones the way they are supposed to. Gosh!

I'm really surprised that they targeted the Harry Potter series. Philip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" series is heavily anti-religious, but yet he escapes scrutiny while poor Harry is accused of being the tool of the devil.

I'm sure being popular has a lot to do with it. And I don't just mean in the sense of popular as easily identifiable, but also in way popularity can bring out envious attacks.

Sadly book burners have been around for centuries - though it does make one wonder if we should respect the family, if so many families are intent on bringing up their kids in a cloistered environment that "protects" 'em from vital real world knowledge.

And I'm sure they hate the His Dark Materials books too - or if not yet, they will when the first movie comes out (it's the first film Chris Weitz will have directed since About a Boy, of which I'm a big, big fan). I'm sooooo excited about it - Nicole Kidman is a great choice for Mrs. Coulter, and having Ian McShane voice the armored bear - brilliant!

The Crooks and Liars story you posted was really depressing. This is like something out of The Handmaiden's Tale.

I'm excited to see the movie version too. I think it'll be great.
