The ongoing travails of comment spam

It's time for a democracy moment.

Or at least an enlightened despot moment.

Here's the deal... we've been getting tons of comment spam. Sometimes I delete over a thousand a day. That doesn't even take into account the ones that Armand and Baltar might delete in addition. Since we made the MT upgrade the good news is that less of it makes it to the main page. The bad news is that everyone else is getting moderated, even the three of us. Because those real comments are in the hopper with all the spam, there is a chance that a bulk delete when someone is sleepy or hasn't had coffee yet (no names, please) will accidentally burn a real comment.

This happened to our regular, Moon, the other day.

So, I'm thinking about turning on the authenticator system which will make everyone have to do the Typekey thing to post comments. That's the bit of hassle. The good news about that is that once you have posted using the authentication system, I can mark you as "trusted" and then your comments (you know who you are here) will be automatically be published, but I can still set the spam catcher to death star level for all the other crap.

Any comments?

Yeah. Switch to Wordpress and let Akismet wipe everything out.

You and I talked about Wordpress in the past, but my question revolves around the varying levels of tech savvy held by the writers here. Will Wordpress be a difficult adjustment?

I have a level of tech savvy? Hmmm - I guess none is a level. :)

Well, I wasn't going to say that directly, but yeah. When we started this thing Baltar was supposed to be our tech man, and he did the vast majority of the work getting things set up, for which I am eternally grateful. Since that time, and especially since we upgraded to the newer version of MT, I've been doing more (or at least that's my impression) with maintaining the templates, monitoring the settings, etc. I am very comfortable with messing around with the setup, and we have Wonderful Server Folk at our Fabulous Local ISP who have been great at troubleshooting when things get beyond our competence. Basically, though, I want to make sure that any one of us can run the site, so if I get hired by a campaign to be their official cusser or something, that those left behind can carry on.

I think it's actually easier to deal with than MT... as a writer they are both pretty foolproof. I've set it up for non-tech friends to write on, and no complaints.

You just made a grave error, my friend.
