Obama-Lugar

At the moment Mark Halperin is leading The Page with the suggestion that Obama's pick might be Indiana's other senator, Dick Lugar. Yes, the senior Republican on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. It's an interesting thought, but is this just Halperin once again pulling something out of his ass?

Yeah, I've thought about this possibility myself. Could happen.

But Mark Halperin, as influential as he is, is known to be King of All Douchebags.

Interesting. But if he's going to pick the 8th or 9th most liberal Republican in the Senate (my estimate) for his foreign policy background, and even though he's 76 years old, couldn't he do better? Why not the 2nd most liberal Republican, who is younger, more dynamic, more female, has foreign policy experience as well, and is pro-choice and pro-civil unions? Olympia Snowe...

I did mention it the other day, but I was kinda joking... and Halperin's mention probably means it's even less likely.

Bruce, Snowe may have some experience, but she isn't a defense/foreign policy eminence like Lugar (or Hagel, or Biden, or etc.) End of story.

It's the ass thing.

Ummm, well she was on Foreign Affairs her whole time in the House (16 years?). And in the Senate she was on Armed Service before switching to the most-widely desired committee, Finance.

She isn't one of those handful of specialists annointed by the punditocracy as a defense/foreign policy expert, but she knows a good deal.

But the knock against he is that while more ideologically in tune with Dems than other would-be "moderates" she's actually quite partisan, if not so conservative. The idea of her turning against the Republican label - I don't see it.

Being on the committee isn't the same thing as being an "eminence"... but you knew what I meant.
