The Republican News Network - Shielding the Public from the Dangerously Unqualified

Carl Cameron is completely untrustworthy. That was certainly made apparent by his coverage of Kerry-Bush in 2004. But even knowing that, seeing him admit to this is remarkable. FoxNews must protect its masters at all costs, apparently - even if that means turning the White House into a combination of Being There and a Focus on the Family convention.

What I don't get... and let's be serious about this, because we can blame Fox News, but c'mon: What was McCain thinking when he picked her? How did the GOP allow McCain to pick someone like her? Anyway, if you aren't brainwashed by Fox News and watched the Katie Couric and the Charlie Gibson interviews, this "new" revelation about her geographic knowledge shouldn't come as a surprise.

What's the objection here -- that he didn't use off the record comments to say something that almost certainly would have cost him whatever access he has to anyone on the right or left, or that he didn't somehow take what he'd learned off the record and find the one Mysterious Republican Deep Throat, who many more competent reporters never found, willing to say anything that harmed the Republican ticket? I mean, if it's off the record it's off the record -- the fault lies with McCain for allowing himself to be used and maneuvered into a ludicrous choice; and the staffers, who apparently were so slavishly loyal that engaging in conduct and silence designed to maximize the likelihood that Sarah Palin would enter office with a greater than 25% chance of becoming President.

I'm not saying anything nice about Crawford, to be clear: just that off the record has to mean off the record, and the "knew it all along" critique that it was posted under reflects a pretty serious ignorance of how journalism works, and how it must.

Well I will confess to not watching him regularly. But he's a known cheerleader for the Republicans, and he's been caught in the past playing the role. My point is that if I watched his reports over the last 2 months I'd be stunned if he wasn't cheerleading for Palin. And doing that while keeping info like this secret would be deeply dishonest.

True, maybe he wasn't promoting her and defending her qualifications - but I'd be surprised if that was the case.

I wonder if he really knew it all along... or if he's being spoon-fed by certain bitter voices from the McCain campaign and pretending to have had more access than he really did...
